Boundary Waters Memories Are For A Lifetime

Over the weekend, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton Ohio.  The collection is incredible and everyone should go there sometime. I saw two airplanes that particularly moved me.  The first plane was Air Force One which was in service during the Kennedy administration.  The second plane was the Hanoi Taxi – the plane that brought the first POWs home from Viet Nam.  Both planes hold vivid spots in my memories of growing up.

Creating Boundary Waters Memories

Memories from growing up can be some of the most cherished that we hold.  However, as parents, we know that creating family memories for our teenage children can be tough.  We are led to believe that our teenage kids don’t want to be seen with us, talk to us or do anything with us.  I don’t buy that.Taking a trip with your kids to a place that engages them can have many benefits.

  • First, your kids can interact with you without worrying that they will be seen by their peers.

  • Second, if they are engaged, they will probably lose the aloofness that teens are known for, and even enjoy themselves.

  • Third, if the destination provides some quiet space, your teenagers may even talk to you about things they care about.

Camping With Teens To Create Great Memories

Did you know that camping can be one of the best ways to create a great family memory for your teen?  Why? Because camping can allow for the following:

  1. Unplugged time for the whole family – no phones or internet or tv.

  2. Family quiet time each day when each person can do their own thing like reading, fishing, etc.

  3. Meal preparation and eating as a family.

  4. Every night can be a family game night.

  5. Campfires and s’ mores (great no matter what age you are).

The Boundary Waters canoe wilderness is a great destination for families with teens.  Canoeing, camping, fishing, wildlife photography and stargazing are just a few of the attractions.  Canoe trips can be as easy or challenging as each family desires.  And, perhaps most importantly, your teens will remember a canoe camping trip for the rest of their lives.
