There Can be More to a BWCA S’more

See this content in the original post

Most people love the ever-classic kid-friendly, BWCA camp fire treat, S’mores. Most can claim fond childhood camping trip memories of roasting marshmallows and smashing them with chocolate between two slices of graham crackers.

The simplicity of the recipe along with nostalgia have kept this a favorite for generations, but little has changed in the way of variety over the years. But if you’re ready for a change then I’ve got a few suggestions.

Add Peanut Butter

Add some peanut butter to your S’more

Peanut butter is the bacon of the treats and sweets world. If you want it to be better, just add peanut butter. On a s’more, a little (or big) dab on the cracker will go add that new element of texture and flavor you were missing.

Swap out the Graham

Though the graham is the classic choice, you’re selling yourself short. There are many other grand choices available to you. Keebler Fudge Stripes have popped up as a cult favorite. With this you still get the traditional graham cracker element, but the chocolate covering either doubles your chocolate load or saves you a step if you want to forgo the piece of chocolate.

Another option would be swapping out the graham for some cookies. I like a classic chocolate chip, but shortbread is fun, too.

One more suggestion. Oreos. Untwist the oreo, put your mallow inside. Yum. Again I say, Yum.

Add Candy

The top of my candy additive list is a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. It has chocolate and, of course peanut butter. The chocolate is more than willing to melt for you and the gooey goodness that follows.

A Rolo is a great option. It adds in an element of caramel. Just shove it right into the mallow before you roast it to get the caramel and chocolate nice and melted.

I’ve also tried adding thin mints, Andes mints, M&Ms, Reese’s Pieces, Twix…the list goes on. There is no shortage of candy that’ll find good friendship between your grahams.

Create Your BWCA S'more Classic

S'mores can make a Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness canoe trip better than ever, especially when camping with kids. Whatever changes you make, this treat will remain a classic and the traditional mallow roast will continue to linger in the nostalgia of generations to come.
